Well, the local McDonald’s in town closes today. Its been there 10 20 years, amazing really.

I’m not really a McDonald’s (yes that’s ‘Mc’ not ‘MAc’ if I hear anyone else calling it MacDonald’s I think I may go around calling KFC, KFB) fan but it will be quite sad to see it go.

A few years ago, before I knew what healthy eating was I would see a Big Mac and Fries as a staple part of my weekly diet. After going to the Odeon to see a film (which has also closed) it was ritual to go and gorge on over fried produce in cardboard packaging while waiting for the train home.

Of course this ritual stopped years ago when I began to see the utter banality of their produce, not to mention the associated health issues. With age comes wisdom and a more sensitive palette. (Keep reading)

Occasionally I end up with a load of links stuck in my Firefox toolbar, it seems a shame to delete them and have no archive. So here they are for this month:

A few days ago the $12,000+ “Run WinXP on a Mac” prize was won by 2 hardworking hackers.

Joy of Tech, as ever, had some excelent social commentry on this:

JoT “I have become death”

But that wasn’t all. A few days later the Xbox 360 was hacked allowing game back-ups to run:

Months of hard work have come to an end. The 360 FW security details were posted a few days ago already, so why not make it official :-) It’s been done.

Full story at Xbox-Scene.

Not a perfect or by any means user friendly hack, but it does at least show some promise.

Fashionably OR foolishly late?

PS3 latttteeeSony, arrogant or stupid? I just don’t know anymore. Yesterday I mocked the “Spring” release date they had pencilled in for the PS3 way back in May last year. Anyone with an ear to the gaming wall knew this date was totally unrealistic.

So, yesterday Sony admitted it. The PS3 will NOT be ready for Spring, nor Summer. It will be ready “Early November 2006″ just in time for you to get your bonfires warmed up and throw an effigy of Ken Kutaragi on there for publicly lying to you for so long.

Joystiq have the best coverage of the press conference. Which outlined the online gaming facilities of the PS3 (or serious lack of) something about Linux home networking (in a vein attempt to lure the geeks back onside) and a whole lot of news on the PSP (just in case you wanted to buy a DS Lite).

Sony blame Blu-ray Security on the delay. Aww, poor Blu-ray taking the slack for this mess of a console launch. If Blu-ray WAS to blame how come we can’t at very least have some PL-A-Y-A-BL-E games instead of pre-rendered shite. Anything would do! Run it from a Dev-kit for Christ’s sake! (Keep reading)

Sky HD - Doing my HeaD in..

Recently I discovered that I would have to move from a Cable TV/Broadband solution towards Satellite TV and ADSL. So the past few weeks I have been researching the different options available to me.

There is really only ONE satellite TV provider in the UK - Sky.

Sky Logo

It seems the package that will suit my needs best will cost around £36 a month. For this price I finally get access to the sports package which will save endless trips to the pub during football-laden weekends (maybe). I’m happy to pay this, but there is a problem. You see recently they have announced a HD service “Sky HD“. (Keep reading)

E’fin Microsoft!

The Origami Project from Microsoft has hit web headlines in a massive way recently. Digg, for example, went into a hyper-sooper-hype mode with stories appearing on the homepage every few hours. People had so many questions. As did I.

  • What is Origami?
  • What will it look like?
  • How much will it cost?
  • Will it play Xbox Games?
  • Will it finally be the iPod killer Microsoft have been touting?

Some cool looking mock ups were leaked, my favorite being this one:

“WOW!” I thought. A mini-tablet PC. Not much bigger than a PSP but running a fully blown version of Windows XP. Who wouldnt want that?

So I/we/the world waited and yesterday Microsoft announced the Origami in all its glory!! (Keep reading)

Webhost “Holy Grail”

After reading this article I wonder, did I rush into selecting PowWeb as my new webhost? I went with PowWeb because they were cheap, had been around a while and came recommended by a couple of hosting review sites.

I wont say I have had a particularly BAD experience with them, in fact they have been very reliable. However I find there Control Panel very frustrating and have had huge email problems over the past few weeks.

What I will say is, in a years time, chances are I will again be moving to a different host.

Of course this places me in danger of falling into the “Holy Grail” webhost syndrome. I could in theory find myself switching between one host and another (and another… and another… and another… ) every year until I eventually find one that I am comfortable with.
