Worse than I thought…

Its a hell of a lot worse than I thought.

I fired up the 360 and threw Gears of War in only to find out ALL of my game saves are gone. I have to start over from square one (well, 6 months ago).

This is totally unacceptable. Why on earth would the developers write a system where this could happen?!? I understand loosing my gamerscore but my saves! Come on, that’s just fucking ridiculous.

It makes it doubly worse that the muppets at Microsoft Support replied to my support request with this:

Dear Mr.Jones

Thank you for your email, for your convenience you will be able to find the solution of your inquiry, in the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911198/en-us

A reply which has nothing to do with my actual problem.

It did however help me understand why I could not log in. It looks like my 360 was given a new “ID” when it was repaired a few weeks ago. This made it impossible for me to use the gamertag on my hard drive as it was no longer linked to the hardware.

The fix it seems was to use a memory card. The funny (I am not laughing while writing this) thing is I purchased a memory card while my 360 was away being repaired and moved my gamertag onto it in order to ensure its preservation in case my hard drive suddenly failed.

However, on the advice of my friends at Microsoft I moved it back to the hard drive as soon as my 360 came back from the repair centre, a move which I eternally regret.
