I suffer from blepharitis. Its an eye condition that makes the lids of my eye become sore and red unless I regularly wash them out with baby shampoo (yes, its as disgusting as it sounds).
There is no cure and no other treatment available. And because I’m lazy I can sometimes go weeks without treating my eyes in the right way. This can lead to incredibly sore and tired eyes – not good for someone who stares at a screen for up to 10 hours a day!
For anyone out there in the same boat as me I offer these simple tips:
- WASH YOUR EYES! Do it at least every other day. Even when they don’t feel like they need it, they do, trust me.
- WASH – YOUR – EYES! (see point 1).
- Use eye drops sparingly. Remember its your eye lids NOT the eye itself which is at fault. Eye drops work in the sort-term but they are simply combating the fact that your dry and inflamed eye lids are scraping away at your eye balls.
- Get some Optrex ActiMist™ Eye Spray its not cheap at £15 per bottle but its really helps as a ‘quick fix’ before you need to use your eyes for driving or going to the cinema for example.
- Blink, often. You need to BLINK a LOT to keep your eyes moist. Most blepharitis sufferers don’t blink as often as they should. My eye doctor told me I needed to FORCE myself to blink once every few seconds, every now and again. It really does help.
- Take eye breaks – I play video games, work on a screen and watch TV for hours every single day. My eyes hate me for it. Taking a break to read something or just to rest your eyes is the best advice I can give – the only problem is I don’t follow it.
Of course, every blepharitis sufferer should know at least some of these facts. But if you are new to the condition OR if you aren’t taking the right actions for your symptoms then this advice should help.
Seriously – If you feel sleepy, depressed, stressed or worn down chances are its just the blepharitis kicking in. There have been weeks when I’ve simply let slip my treatments and have felt like I’ve suffered from a constant hangover with no cure. After a few days of treatment I feel anew, like I can SEE and THINK clearly again. Imagine one of those great mornings when you’ve had the BEST nights sleep ever and the sun is shining though the window.
Cheesy I know, but true.
Note: I am not a clinician or medically trained in any way. I’ve had this condition for almost 5 years now and I still suffer badly. Do not think any of these tips will cure you, they may not even help in more drastic cases.

Hi red eyed peeps,
I have the gland and posterior bleph. I had to go back to the doctors who told me: use a steriod drop (Lotemax?) to strengthen my eyes, then Restasis (expensive!!!) then they will surgically close the tear ducts for the moisture to remain on my eyes longer. All my medications are costing me $400/month on my eyes! I don’t have health insurance and am paying out of pocket and I’m young. I can’t imagine 70 more years of this. I want my tax money going to a CURE for this disease, instead of the useless wasteful spending. I think we should petition the government for research and development of this disease and find a cure for everyone!! It’s not rare 5% of all eye doctor visits are because of this, and it seems a cure is possible yet no body has found it yet.
Hiya guys how do you apply shield soap on your eyes please cos going to get some to see if it helps? Thanks x
Hi Annamarie
Just wash your face with the Shield soap at least twice a day, if your eyes are really bad I would try washing more. Good luck
Hi Annamarie,
Just reading your post from March 26th; it’s just a teaspoon of salt to a pint of water, not a tablespoon. That should keep in the fridge for nearly a week just using an eggcup full each time you wash your eyelashes. I hope you notice a great improvement in your eyes soon.
Regards,
Marian
Thanks Marian I will keep you up dated
Hiya sue
Sorry to be a pain but do you rub the soap in your hands with water then rub it all over your face and eyes,
Thanks
HIya guys this is my first nite of trying the boiled water in salt, it felt really nice a cold on my eyes were the water has been left in the fridge hope it makes a change, please give it a try to see if it works for you?
Any questions you would like to ask me do feel free. X
Hi Annamarie
I use a wet face cloth rub with soap then rub all over your face making sure to rub over eyelids and eyelashes. I am also taking Omega 3 fish oil every day and a probiotic yoghurt (as I read that it could be a yeast imbalance in the body which could be causing fungus and probiotic yoghurt fights this) Hope this helps x
Thank you so much sue for taking the time to help me x
Thanks for this advice, mine came about after having a stye, never had eye probs prior to that, and the doc is making me start a regimen I’m having trouble dealing with. So seeing these points help, and is much appreciated.
I truely believe I discovered a cure for blepharitis out of deperation. They say there is no cure but Im convinced tht is not true!!! I suffered from Blepharitis most of my life. I didnt want to hasle with washing my eyes three times a day and still have my eyes red and irratated. I couldnt even go through a whole week without my eyes swelling. I was fed up with the itching and red swelled eye lids that out of desperation I tried an over the counter cream that you can get at any drug store. Its been three month now and my symptoms have not returned. I really believe I found a cure for it. If your deperate like I was and would like to try it the cream was Miconazole (vaginal antifungal). Sounds gross I know but like I said I was fed up and refused to believe that there wasnt something that would work. I used it for about a week and applied it at night before I went to bed. Then washed my eye in the morning. Since then Ive had no symptoms what so ever!!!
Omg really I am going to give it a go and see if it works anything is worth a try? Thanks
Hi robbert,
So are your eyes not red or have my flaky bits stuck on your eye lids, and also do you have to clean them any more? Thanks
HI robbert
I have been reading about the cream that you have talked about and it says not to go near the eyes, so I am now worried cos don’t know what to do but where you said it works I really want to try it!
Hiya guys its up to you but I am going to give this micanozole ago cos been on another site and some one used it cos she had ran out of her cream that the doctor gives her and they were away so she could not get any but one of her friends had that cream on her and she used a bit on her eyes and it made it go and she has not had it back in 10years x
So that’s 2 different people now that have used it and its went x
There is no universal cure for blepharitis otherwise it would have been discover years ago. Use of a vaginal antifungal off label should be done with caution. It MAY work for some (maybe a few) but I would advise caution in its use. I have previously advised Nizarol shampoo and lid scrubs as a remedy (not a cure) in previous posts and this has worked for a majority of those I have recommended it too. Bear in mind that blepharitis is multifactorial and what works for one doesn’t always work for all.
Hello fellow sufferers
OK
I have MGD and slight Anterior Blepharitis.
Left eye causes more problems with itchy, painful eyelid.
Eyeballs look ok although I have had 4 bouts of Marginal Keratitis (ulcers on eyeball)
Eyelash breakage on left upper eyelid (partial).
They have grown back.
USE PRESERVATIVE FREE anything.
DON’T USE JOHNSONS BABY SHAMPOO. Even at diluted levels it strips the skin so eyes? Bad press over last 2 years..
I use salt or (bicarbonate of soda a close 2nd) but don’t really like it.
For the Itch: Diluted vinegar in water and bathe eyerims with cotten bud. Or soak warm flannel when bathing eyes.
I USE CELLUVISC PRESERVATIVE EYE DROPS during the day to replace compromised tear film 4 x 2 drops daily.
HYLO-FORTE intensive lubrication for night delivered preservative free.
When necessary Dexamethasone sodium Phosphate 0.1% (steroid) drops, as local fauna can irritate my eyeball rendering them a little red and in turn this can affect eyelids because of allergic reaction.
For localised infection either of eyeball or to calm irritation in eyelid I acquire a presc. Fucithalmic Eye Ointment. This has the dreaded BAK Benzalkonium Chloride preservative though so for long term acute treatment I am not happy and am seeking another antibiotic cream or ointment without this preservative.
I AM SORRY BUT I DO NOT AGREE WITH WASHING THE EYES OUT, BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBLE INTRODUCTION OF BACTERIA POSSIBLY LEADING TO CONJUNCTIVITUS.
OTC REMEDIES ARE NOT GOOD. DR PRESCRIPTION FOR THIS CONDITION BEST OPTION.
Generally speaking after a bad flare up and 5 weeks with 2 x daily hot flannel compresses for 10 mins followed by eyelid cleaning the discomfort is minimal. I am now bathing eyes 1 x daily and still use Celluvisc eye drops for comfort.
I have been known to use Hydrocortisone 1% if my eyelid itch drives me to distraction but a better option is Tacrolimus Ointment 0.1% as this doesn’t cause skin thinning or discoloration on skin.
Betnasol is another eyelid steroidal anti inflammatory, which doesn’t cause skin discoloration but it is possible to cause skin thinning.
Where to go from here.
I am my own advocate in pursuing the best options for myself along with the consultants expertise.
Hope this helps. Bye for now and my wishes to you all as this is such a confidence sapping, time consuming, tedious, irritating condition.
HELLO
RE MY PREVIOUS POST. IT SHOULD READ PRESERVATIVE FREE CELLUVISC. NOT CELLUVISC PRESERVATIVE EYE DROPS.
Hello Again
A few things I missed off my last post.
A good diet, plenty of water, exercise is good.
I have noted that some spices and herbs can register irritant symptoms in your eyes. This is more of an allergy but compounded with blepharitis/mgd this of course doesn’t help.
I have also read that with menopausal women, if this applies to anyone, cortisol levels drop which allow the adrenaline levels to rise. Cortisol can reduce inflammation.
Androgens can play a part so in a way the imbalance of hormone levels for people in the typical late age onset of this condition apply. (Perhaps herbal, vitamin and mineral supplements can help here and I know there is very small evidence that flaxseed oil or Omega 3 oils can help the quality of the lipids in the tear film which is compromised with MGD).
I DON’T USE ANY PERFUMED SOAPS OR PRODUCTS NEAR MY FACE – NOT BECAUSE OF BLEPHARITIS – BUT BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN SENSITIVE TO PRODUCTS CONTAINING SAME FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER AND I AM OVER 50 yrs.
HAVING DEVELOPED MGD/BLEPHARITIS THIS IS NOW OF EVEN MORE IMPORTANCE.
Yes it is a struggle and as a blogger states it is a multifactorial condition.
Bye for now.
hi, i’ve had SLK before, and I only ever have gotten it in my right eye. the last time i was diagnosed was earlier this year and i used several steroid drops for my eye, which i do NOT want to consider using again.. how is the eye wash performed exactly? and can SLK be caused by contact lens usage??
thanks,
shreya
I so need help with these eyes!! I have had 4 bad bouts of late and nothing seems to help. My doc gave me antibiotics for 4 weeks plus fucithalmic eye drops and a hydrocortisone cream to put under my eyes when the redness starts. do i need to continue this for the rest of my life?
I wash my face with face wash and then wash my eyes with johnsons baby shampoo which i must admit seemed to help. I have been on holiday and never had one bout of this – now I am back at work one day (yesterday) and it started up. Could dirt in the environment i work in do it? the heating runs 24/7 in my place of work and i worked a 12 hour shift yesterday, and after about 8 hours my eyes started to itch and had a yelllowish discharge from them. my right eye feels like there is a big stone under the lid – the left eyelid is swollen and under the eye is red and puffy. both eyes are bloodshot.
I hate this and it is getting me down.

my right eye has white cloudiness over the top part of the iris, feels uncomfortable especially under bright lights

Hiya guys
I am going to give this a try and see if it helps to rub vaseline on the eye lids at nite and to dip a green tea bag in to hot water let it cool a bit and leave them on your eyes for 2 or 3 min then clean your eyes as you normaly would! I will let you know how it goes, hope it helps some on. there
I’ve had blepharitis for 6 or 7 years, starting with a pea sized lump in my left eyelid, and some cysts which I had removed. Since then I get red, swollen, painful eyes, which also affects my eyesight (cloudy). I’ve been under a hospital consultant who got me to do hot compresses and months and months of antibiotics. Within a week I have it back and spots too (mine is linked with acne rosacea). My doctor has now told me I can’t keep taking antibiotics as I’m 48, and as you get older prolonged use can cause kidney problems. No-one has ever explained eye care other than compress, so today I have ordered some blephasol lotion from Amazon. I’ll let you know how I get on. I may go for the Omega 3 as well. Thanks for the site and for all the posts – this will become a real favourite for me.
I’ve been battling this condition for 2 years now. At first I had no clue what the heck this was and was astounded once I found out that it’s on-going plus the fact that everyone’s case depends
Best treatment working for me now is lid scrubs and the heated compresses!
I usually do it twice a day but sometimes my flare ups will be more irritant so sometimes I will up it to 3 times a day.
I can definitely feel a difference but I know a lot of people have tried that to little or no help.. well hope you guys find something that helps!
God Bless
I have sufferered with blepharitis for a few years now and it is an awful condition. However, there is hope!
My optician recommended a new product for it, called blephagel.
It wasn’t cheap but well worth it. it is a gel (as suggested by the name of product!)
Let me know what you all think of this range of product.
I have Roscea blepharitis, first optomaligist couldn’t find anything when I complained about red eyes swollen under eyelids, after months I finally found a doctor who confirmed Roscea Blepharitis ! In the mean time I am taking antibiotics and eyelidscrubbing,I am doing everything but the swollen eyelids remain!! Will this ever go away?? It’s like discoloured under my tear ducts, and makes me look very tired and old.
Does anybody have a useful tip for me??
Thank you,
Mar
Hello everyone
Has anyone read about ‘Demodex Mites’. These live quite happily in hair follices but can proliferate and cause problems or we can develop an intolerance to their excretia. How about looking up ‘Tea Tree Oil’.
There are also fungal yeasts that can affect the eyes, names of which escape me but you will find plenty of details on the web.
What types of blepharitis are there
1. Infection of the staphyccocal strain
2. Seborrheic Dermatitis of the eyelids
3. Eczema of the eyelids
4. Parasites or mites
5. Fungal invasion – Candida
6. Herpes Simplex
7. MGD (meibomian gland dysfunction which means
the oil lipids delivered through the oil glands in the upper and lower lids becomes thick and of poor quality. Sometimes the oil glands get blocked hence the hot compresses etc.
The eyeball doesn’t get the right tear film and that is why lubrication drops are so important.. The hot compresses soften this thick lipid and the cleaning and massage help the flow and stop any infection building up in the oil.
Other illnesses can cause eye problems ie.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Autoimmune Conditions
There is a lot of information on the web.
At the moment another section of my left upper eyelid is itching like crazy and its taking all the my strength not to scratch, but I have. I have a few lost lashes cause I can feel a gap.
I have bought some ‘Demodex Mite’ cream from the web which my doctor smelt and said it is mainly Tea Tree oil delivered for use on the eyelid.
Not sure if it works but I am using at the moment just to try and get over this flare up. It is a bit of an irritant (NEVER USE NEAT TEA TREE OIL) and could quell any proliferation of the ‘demodex mite’ which may just be causing irritation there.
What a nuisance all this is and I get a bit fed up at times but last week I managed to go to a wedding and my eyes were not feeling too bad and not looking too bad. I put my sensitive eye make up on in the car park of the venue so they weren’t exposed to any irritant for too long.
I don’t normally wear eye make up now unless I go somewhere special and then I only wear a bit of shadow in the crease of my eyelid, under my eyelid, blusher, lipstick as I always have done. I only put the tiniest bit of mascara on and use a special eye makeup remover which I bought on the web which is a little expensive but worth it.
Must fly for now – my grand daughter woke up.
Suffered from blepharitis and MGD for 1 year and it’s doing my head in as most things just irritate my eyes after a while..I’ve tried baby shampoo and that just makes my eyes red and dry, tried blephasol and it gave me terrible systemic side effects .ie: body weakness, confusion, irritability, itchy eyelids.warm compresses just make my eyes more inflammed and swollen . So you can understand my frustration as I am the hypersensitive type who can’t tolerate much! Problem is I can’t do heat so I can’t help express the blocked glands which then causes more problems. I’m now getting thick greasy scaly crusts on my lower lids and losing lots of eyelashes. I’m gonna book a dermatologist now to see If they can help? Also just bought sterilid eye cleaner and gonna try that..
It’s great to find your entries in this blog.
My blepharitis is from UV exposure, 51 yrs of age with an out door lifestyle in Australia. After being treated like a drug user for 3 years a new eye doctor instantly diagnosed me and warned me to wear sunglasses. I should heat my eyes with a warm cloth and massage the eyelids. My redness is really reduced by washing with TheraTears SteriLid eyelid cleanser. I use a little wash-pad I bought on a pack of L’oreal face cleanser to apply it to my closed eyes. I have lubricant eyedrops, Systane Balance.
Mine is the #7.
Thanks for sharing and I hope to hear more about it.

Hiya guys,
What I found that has been helping is getting a wash cloth getting it really hot and holding it on my eyes for about a min then getting cotton buds to clean any crust from my eye lids hope this is helpful, good luck everyone.
Hi all. I have been suffering from severe dry eye and blepharitis for 5 yars now and its been driving me crazy, constant usage of Systane ultra drops for dry eye and the Torbex antibiotics eye drops and Relestat for inflammation. I Became so fed up with the constat pain irritation that i started to use a ointment we in South Africa have called ZAMBUK http://www.sgbox.com/zambuk.html, its a eucalyptus ointment that you can rub onto the outside of the eyelids. it has a bit of a sting like pepperment in the beginning that makes your eyes feel refreshed, and it takes the scratchy and irritation feel away. I am not sure if its a long lasting “cure” but it has been working wonders for me for the last 3 weeks. less and less washing and drops. Is anyone out there also using it? I am not sure what the long lasting effects of it might be on the eyes but i cant find any info online if its good or bad. so i hope for the best. Sofar my eyes has been less red swollen or irritated. L
Hello guys,
Thank you for all your posts. My story is little different, I got blepharitis from contaminated makeup! I spent past two months in A&E thinking I was going blind, and in severe pain, grit feeling and serious swollen eyelids and lashes so badly stuck together. Been on many products. Now under a really good eye doctor who has managed to help the system. She said on a scale of 1-10 I now only have 1. I have been using baby shampoo, Eyelid wipes and only one eye drop (was on 7 and many times a day) I use artelac single doses and I find it really helps. I am not out of the woods, but well better then I was. I don’t feel as stressed…. I wash my eyes three times a day. I also take flax oil. I read about the viginal cream, did anyone try it?
Wish you all well, hope one day they will finally find a cure for this.. Look after yourselves and stay positive & believe it will be cured:) hopefully one day soon it will xx
warm compresses every pm for at least 10 min and wash those eyelids with the generic scrubs at the drug store. the swelling is a pain i live at the beach!! found sunglasses that cover eyes with foam on the inside and with a baseball cap do not look too bad. found them at an online site foxcreek leather an the stye is outfitter only 25.00> i use to walk the dog and for hikes and help alot. i still get puffy but not as bad. bought a second pair for backup. good luck everyone, this condition gets you down cause there are alot of things you have to give up doing. gets depressing after 4 years!
