I suffer from blepharitis. Its an eye condition that makes the lids of my eye become sore and red unless I regularly wash them out with baby shampoo (yes, its as disgusting as it sounds).
There is no cure and no other treatment available. And because I’m lazy I can sometimes go weeks without treating my eyes in the right way. This can lead to incredibly sore and tired eyes – not good for someone who stares at a screen for up to 10 hours a day!
For anyone out there in the same boat as me I offer these simple tips:
- WASH YOUR EYES! Do it at least every other day. Even when they don’t feel like they need it, they do, trust me.
- WASH – YOUR – EYES! (see point 1).
- Use eye drops sparingly. Remember its your eye lids NOT the eye itself which is at fault. Eye drops work in the sort-term but they are simply combating the fact that your dry and inflamed eye lids are scraping away at your eye balls.
- Get some Optrex ActiMist™ Eye Spray its not cheap at £15 per bottle but its really helps as a ‘quick fix’ before you need to use your eyes for driving or going to the cinema for example.
- Blink, often. You need to BLINK a LOT to keep your eyes moist. Most blepharitis sufferers don’t blink as often as they should. My eye doctor told me I needed to FORCE myself to blink once every few seconds, every now and again. It really does help.
- Take eye breaks – I play video games, work on a screen and watch TV for hours every single day. My eyes hate me for it. Taking a break to read something or just to rest your eyes is the best advice I can give – the only problem is I don’t follow it.
Of course, every blepharitis sufferer should know at least some of these facts. But if you are new to the condition OR if you aren’t taking the right actions for your symptoms then this advice should help.
Seriously – If you feel sleepy, depressed, stressed or worn down chances are its just the blepharitis kicking in. There have been weeks when I’ve simply let slip my treatments and have felt like I’ve suffered from a constant hangover with no cure. After a few days of treatment I feel anew, like I can SEE and THINK clearly again. Imagine one of those great mornings when you’ve had the BEST nights sleep ever and the sun is shining though the window.
Cheesy I know, but true.
Note: I am not a clinician or medically trained in any way. I’ve had this condition for almost 5 years now and I still suffer badly. Do not think any of these tips will cure you, they may not even help in more drastic cases.

Hi all, sad to hear all your experiences but glad to know I am not alone :/
I also have bleph (and I suspect MGD) and doctors DO brush it off; perhaps they dont realise how hard it is to look in the mirror and always get that bad view of your eyes!
I have had two surgeries to remove chalazions; both last years and I have another one again! Trying to avoid the surgery- now on doxycycline and have ordered occusoft since it has been praised a lot.
I wear no makeup, have given up lenses and clean eyes with warm water twice a day- its not enough it seems.
Good luck to us all!
So glad I’m not alone in this condition! And so pleased to read Michael’s comment about being depressed and worn out as I hadn’t put the 2 things together. I think you almost get used to dealing with it day to day and forget how it can make life so much harder some days without realising. I have been suffering for over a year on and off and this time it’s not getting any better. Fortunately I have recently changed doctor’s and I have actually been diagnosed with Bleph and referred to the hospital. I too have been taking Doxycycline for a month or so, but not really made any difference. The only time I had a break from Bleph was when I had a week off work at Christmas, with more sleep, less computer and driving and less stress! So I get that it can be a lifestyle issue, but we all still have to work and live our lives! There are some great tips here which I will try. I’m currently managing it with nightly heat packs (when I can be bothered) and artificial gel tears 4 times a day when at work. Thanks for the support everyone and don’t give up…
I genuinely enjoy looking at on this internet site , it contains fantastic articles . “Wealth and children are the adornment of life.” by Koran.
My eye specialist told me to stop the drops and wash my eyes and face with shield soap twice a day. I didn’t believe it would work but for me it did. Try it. I used to put drops in up to 5times a day! I hardly use eye drops.
hi great article but you keep saying was your eyes but you say its not the eyes but the eye lids so which is it and more importantly how do i wash my eyes? do i use warm water, a flannel, soap etc.??? please be more clear on this excellent guide
