Fashionably OR foolishly late?
Sony, arrogant or stupid? I just don’t know anymore. Yesterday I mocked the “Spring” release date they had pencilled in for the PS3 way back in May last year. Anyone with an ear to the gaming wall knew this date was totally unrealistic.
So, yesterday Sony admitted it. The PS3 will NOT be ready for Spring, nor Summer. It will be ready “Early November 2006″ just in time for you to get your bonfires warmed up and throw an effigy of Ken Kutaragi on there for publicly lying to you for so long.
Joystiq have the best coverage of the press conference. Which outlined the online gaming facilities of the PS3 (or serious lack of) something about Linux home networking (in a vein attempt to lure the geeks back onside) and a whole lot of news on the PSP (just in case you wanted to buy a DS Lite).
Sony blame Blu-ray Security on the delay. Aww, poor Blu-ray taking the slack for this mess of a console launch. If Blu-ray WAS to blame how come we can’t at very least have some PL-A-Y-A-BL-E games instead of pre-rendered shite. Anything would do! Run it from a Dev-kit for Christ’s sake!
Blu-ray isn’t to blame. The console just isn’t ready. Sony rested on there laurels for too long and Microsoft jumped the gun with the 360 and now they know they have a real race on there hands to compete. Something they haven’t had to do since the PS1.
By November, not only will the 360 have been out almost a year but the Nintendo Revolution will be snooping around with its crazy controller probably selling better than people thought.
Couple this with the fact that the PS3 will be massively more expensive than both the 360 and the Revolution and that Blu-ray will inevitably drive the cost of games media higher mean that Sony are really in trouble. Do they deserve it? Probably.
